Dear Friend,

The National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut is an organization of blind people. We have as our major goal the improvement of the lives of the blind. Our philosophy is that with proper training and opportunity a blind person can lead a full and productive life.

We are a non-profit organization and do not use the services of a professional fundraiser.

We grant substantial scholarships to legally blind individuals who are full-time college students. We also offer grants to blind individuals seeking better career opportunities. It is a well-established fact that advanced education plays a key part in anyone’s future.

We conduct seminars on issues concerning blind persons. At our Job Opportunities for the Blind seminars, individuals hear from experts in the field of employment. We have held seminars for parents of blind children and also for persons who are blind and diabetic. There are a number of occupation-related divisions within our organization that provide valuable sources of information. Do you detect a common theme in all of the above? It’s called networking in today’s world.

In 1997, we introduced Newsline for the Blind in Connecticut. This versatile service enables blind people to read both The Hartford Courant and The New Haven Register, as well as virtually every national newspaper, via a touch-tone telephone using a toll-free number. Operating on the same touch-tone principal and using a 1-800 number is another valuable service called Jobline for the Blind. It offers blind job seekers easy access to nationwide job listings.

So often when a person becomes blind he or she finds it difficult to know where to turn for help. We want to share our knowledge and experience with every blind person looking for information. Our goal, quite simply, is to achieve a level playing field for the blind.

So, this is what we do with the money we raise. Annually, the Attorney General publishes a statement outlines how we use the funds we raise. The latest statement shows that 82% is used for programs (the purposes for which we were formed).

We need your help and we are asking for your contribution. Checks may be made payable to NFB of CT. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Bruce B. Woodward, Treasurer
