The Animal Kingdom
By Mary Brunoli

Mary Brunoli with Ben Snow

EDITOR'S NOTE: For writing this poem, Mary was awarded a first place prize in the Writer's Division Writers Contest in 2003.

Do you remember years ago
When tidying up the house?
We'd sweep away those spider webs,
And trap the pesky mouse.

Well, time has done some crazy tricks,
And we've become enslaved;
Mankind enmeshed in world wide web
Has changed how we've behaved.

The mouse makes us dependent with
Its click-clack leading role;
Communication's mega-speed
Is out of our control.

When we're "on line" to catch some fish,
They just swim out to sea
Cause the net we try to catch them in
Is "inter"-----Woe is me!

The most infuriating thing
Is when the beast invades
The love life of a thousand folk,
Insulting lads and maids.

When "o" means hug, and "x" means kiss,
How foolish we all are
To submit our love to an oxens' life.
The animals win by far.

When everything is said and done,
Who runs this universe?
The animal kingdom rules us all
For better or worse!
