Ode to the Rocking Chair
By Mary Brunoli

EDITOR'S NOTE: Mary won an honorable mention award for this poem in the 2005 Writer's Division Writing Contest

O Rocking Chair, O Rocking Chair
How comf'table you are.
The rhythm of your back-and-forth
Beat rock 'n roll by far.

How many moms with babes in arms
With gentle lullaby
Have lulled themselves to rest as well,
And stopped the baby's cry.

It's not your fault that some folks would
Rely on you instead
Of going out to look for work,
To earn their daily bread.

O, Rocking Chair, O Rocking Chair:
With book in hand, I sit;
The hand smart technology
Cannot compare with it.

O Rocking Chair, O Rocking Chair:
So old, yet ever new;
How many generations owe
Their therapy to you!
