On The Blind Side

Editor's Note: As in the last issue, I'd like to contribute one of many experiences in life as a blind person. I hope many of you hop on the bandwagon and send me some of your experiences too. It could be based on any of life's trials and tribulations as a blind person, humorous or serious.

I recently had an episode with a runaway peach, so here goes!
I do much of my grocery shopping on line through a website called Peapod, with which many of you may be familiar. For those of you who are not, it's a website where one can order and buy groceries through Stop and Shop on your computer and your order is delivered to your door at a time you specify after you finish and place your order.

With the advent of summer, I love fresh fruit, so I ordered peaches. I have a particular little bowl that I place my fruit in and because the bowl was a bit crowded with this fruit, I placed one of the peaches on top of another one, but didn't realize how precariously it was placed.

While I was making lunch, I heard a bounce over by my hutch where the fruit bowl is, then another bounce on the floor, followed by - you guess it - a rolling peach. I couldn't hear where the peach's final resting place was, so I figured I'd start looking over by the hutch which is also located near my kitchen table. I searched all over on my hands and knees, and also used the cane to probe in discrete corners of the room. The peach was nowhere to be found.

Then a couple of hours later, I decided to summon the help of a neighbor because, God forbid, with my luck, I'd step on the peach and smash it. She came to my rescue-or I should say, the peach's rescue. It was nowhere near where I thought it might have rolled. Man! This peach had momentum! It rolled across my tile floor, and over a throw rug, where it rested under the dishwasher which is located at the far end of the kitchen. Wow! You'd think it was a surface-to-air missile! So the next time any of you go shopping, beware of Super Peach!
