Year 2002 Academic Scholarships and Personal Advancement Awards

The National Federation of the Blind is an organization dedicated to creating opportunities for all blind persons. In the furtherance of this goal, we have established our scholarship and personal advancement award program. Recipients of Federation scholarships and awards need not be members of the National Federation of the Blind. Federation scholarships and awards are judged on the basis of academic or program quality, service to the community and financial need.

Post-Secondary Academic Scholarships

The Howard E. May Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $2,000, is given in memory of Howard E. May, the founding president of the National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut.

The Jonathan May Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, is given in memory of Jonathan May who was widely known for his dedication and his leadership, both in Connecticut and the nation.

The Mary Main Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, is given in memory of Mary Main, inspired leader and founder of the Stamford Chapter.

Personal Advancement Awards

Two Sally Prentice Memorial Personal Advancement Awards, in the amount of $1,000 each, are given in memory of Sally Prentice, a dynamic Federationist who met each challenge with courage.

Additional scholarships will be contingent on funding. Contact our state office for more information.

Eligibility

All applicants must be: (a) legally blind and (b) a Connecticut resident or attending school in Connecticut.

Academic Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in a full-time program.

Personal Advancement Awards applicants must be enrolled on a part-time basis or present a need for adaptive equipment, etc.

Deadline — Notification

Completed applications must be submitted by September 15, 2002. The scholarship committee will review all applications and notify winners during the second week of October. The scholarships and personal advancement awards will be presented at the National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut state convention in early November. ALL WINNERS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE ENTIRE CONVENTION AS OUR GUESTS.

Applicant's Letter:

Academic Applicants — Describe your career goals and how our scholarship might help you in achieving them. Give us a brief biographical sketch — tell us about your academic interests, your extracurricular activities, awards/honors you may have received and any community service you have been involved in. Also please describe your financial need.

Personal Advancement Applicants — Describe fully the personal advancement program you have designed for yourself and how the award will help you in carrying out that program. Also tell us about your outside interests, any awards/honors received, any community service you have been involved in and your employment experience. Also please describe your financial need.

Two Letters of Recommendation: From teachers, professors, employers or other professionals who know you well.

Academic Applicants Only: Official academic transcripts (Post secondary students should obtain transcripts from all college/universities attended. High school seniors should obtain them from current and any previous high school attended.)

State Officer's Letter: A letter from a state officer of the National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut confirming that you have discussed your application with him or her.
